This is the opinion of James M Rodgers II
WUTANG has been translated as the altar that the martial arts is laid upon. I chose this translation because of a famous quote by my grandmaster Liu Yun Qiao.
He has said that the Chinese Martial arts have spawned from the same mother, I read that as meaning China and its long history of proud warriors tasked with protecting its people.
Thus I believe WUTANG is more of an Organization of Masters and ancestors than a martial arts system. The organization is deferent to the history of respecting the teachings of our masters and the masters before them. Let me explain:
In most martial arts systems there tends to be a supremacist attitude. In this style-centric philosophy, martial artists vow loyalty to a system and a set of rules pertaining to that system. The ultimate goal is to pass along that system. This fulfills the gang-like attitude that tends to form around these systems and shows a lack of maturity in the system itself. The reason for the lack of maturity is that the purpose of the martial arts system is for group or personal protection and holds a direct sense of pride among the practitioners.
This is not WUTANG. Grandmaster Liu Yun Qiao the founder of what is known as modern WUTANG was a master of many styles. Examples of these are Mi Zong, Baji Quan, Yin Fu Bagua, Six Harmonies Praying Mantis Pigua, and a variety of other arts that he encountered in his historic lifestyle.
Why is this Grandmaster different from others? He was a warrior and was a realist. He loved tradition and was rich in the knowledge of history and the arts. Furthermore, his goal was to reach the pinnacle of martial ability for function. The function of protecting not only dignitaries for which he is famous and a member of a long lineage of bodyguards, but also the innocents which is a clear part of our oath as disciples of WUTANG.
Martial arts without function is just exercise and dance. Grandmaster Liu and all of his serious and loyal students including my master, Grandmaster Yang, were entrusted with a skill that is the pinnacle of Chinese Martial Arts. It is the pinnacle precisely because of its fluidity and its lack of style centric immature gang-like attitudes. It is true that each of us as disciples of WUTANG have a favorite style or technique or even a favorite set of roads (forms). However it is also true that WUTANG is in existence to continually remain the pinnacle of martial arts and this is only done through continuous refinement and evolution.
If a WUTANG disciple refines the arts encompassed within the organization, and is true to the intentions of our founder, which is to say working for the greater good of protecting innocents and the moral and righteous laws of a global society (basic morals found in all religions), then let him work and let us all bring WUTANG into a new generation as viable, effective, and sought after as ever.
